Here’s what I love… {guest post}

When LeAnne asked me to do a guest post on HWIL, it was difficult to decide, from the many things I love, what exactly was best noting in my first blog post.  I began, as always, with a list.  *which I love making!

I enjoy a multitude of interests, from style and fashion to food and entertainment, and most importantly interior design. Again and again, it was obvious that in all these categories I favour combinations and groupings.

I say this as I gaze down on my plaid polo shirt, layered under a cable knit sweater, topped with a statement necklace. Tomorrow it might be a scarf mixed with a necklace, leather jacket, and an armful of bracelets.

Here’s What I Love… layers!

I gravitate to layering colour, texture, pattern, material, sheen and shape in our clients’ interiors everyday as a designer at elle design.  I believe layering in a room is the key to creating comfort and visual interest.

A patterned area rug over hardwood flooring; textural pillows placed strategically on a tufted sofa; dalmatian print wing chairs; sheer linen drapery; a luxurious fur blanket on a gold gilt settee. and check out the millwork details.  So many layers in one fabulous space.

Dove grey cabinetry and teal paneling; open shelving for accessories and everyday items, combined with closed storage for functional cooking tools; concrete perimeter countertops contrasted by a metal island top. Herringbone laid wood floors ground the space with another interesting pattern.

This gorgeous bathroom! Geometric tile flooring in a contrasting colour mix; curvey shapes in the chandelier, vanity sinks and bathtub play on the straight lines of the wall paneling, vanity cabinet, floor pattern and wall mirror.

Successful layering goes on and on and on…
