11 Reasons to Love Area Rugs (& Why You Should Go Custom)

I love rugs. It’s a fact. A good area rug has me swooning in my seat.

A custom rug? I’m on the floor. Breathing, but barely.

Okay, I’m exaggerating, but I swear it’s not far from the truth. An area rug can transport a design from good to great, it can make you feel cosy (which, let’s be honest, we could all use during our Calgary winters), and it instantly elevates your home’s classiness.

When I sat down to write this post for you, I listed all the things I love about rugs. Then I counted. We’re looking at 10 reasons to love rugs… and did you know you can even custom design them?

11 reasons, then. Can you guess them all?

1. GROUND YOUR FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT

Area rugs are a design tool we often use to ground furniture arrangements in a space. We can use rugs to create a “living room” in an open concept space, define a border for your dining room table and chairs, and even centralize the bed in your master suite.

This eye-catching rug grounds the living room and helps unify the shades of blue and soft red.

2. PULL SEVERAL COLOURS TOGETHER IN A SPACE

If you have several colours at work in your space, a rug can harmonise them effortlessly. We’ll just find one with all your colours accounted for, and voilà, harmony at home!

3. PROVIDE GREAT INSPIRATION FOR A DESIGN PALETTE

This same color-harmonising effect can be applied in reverse. If you fall in love with a multi-coloured rug, we can use it as inspiration for your spaces palette. We’ll make sure the rug shines as the breathtaking focal point of your space.

4. ADD VISUAL SOFTNESS TO A ROOM (AND REDUCE ECHO)

You know I love adding texture to an elegant room to soften and cosy it up, and an area rug is another way to do that. Visually, the room will look softer and feel more welcoming — that goes two-fold when the rug softens the echo.

Designed for entertainment, this living room is made more inviting with this soft cerulean and grey beauty

5. CREATE SOFTNESS & WARMTH UNDERFOOT

Sometimes it’s not about the look, but the feel, and there are certain places where a little warmth under the toes won’t go amiss. The first to come to mind are bedrooms and bathrooms. I think we’ve all experienced the startling touch of cold tiles on bare feet. In the summer, why not? But in the winter, no thanks.

6. INTRODUCE A PUNCH OF VIBRANCY OR SIMPLE LUXURY

If you looked at two spaces side by side — but one had a rug where the other didn’t — I think I know which you’d choose. Rugs add a punch of vibrancy, timeless elegance and luxury to a space. There’s no other word for it… they look GOOD.

7. HIDE CRUMBS IN THE DINING ROOM (*WINK*)

Hey, it’s the dining room. We all have crumbs, and that’s okay. So if you don’t have Fido on crumb patrol, rest assured that a colorful or patterned rug will disguise any sneaky getaways. I got you, sister.

8. MAKE A STATEMENT IN YOUR ENTRYWAY

A rug in your entryway is like a gorgeous invitation — it makes an instant statement, sets the tone for the rest of your home’s design, and ushers people inside in style. Not to mention…

9. PROTECT YOUR HARDWOOD FLOORS

Especially in an entryway, rugs are great for catching wet and dirty footwear before they make it to the rest of the house. But in general, having rugs in your home is a nice way to protect your hardwood floors. Rugs are up to the challenge because they…

10. CAN LAST FOR DECADES AND BECOME AN HEIRLOOM

No joke. Decades. High quality rugs will actually appreciate in value over the years and often get passed on as family heirlooms. So that beauty you’ve been eyeing for your foyer? It’s not an expense… it’s a long-term investment!

The colour-harmonising custom rug we designed for our clients’ Contemporary Parisian Remodel will be dropping jaws long into the future.

11. CAN BE CUSTOM DESIGNED FOR YOUR HOME!

I know I spoiled the surprise in the beginning of this post, but did you know that you can order custom designed rugs? We’ve even designed a few for clients here at LBI!

Custom designing a rug gives you control over the size, shape, design pattern, and colours — and there’s nothing quite like a finished product that is 100% designed for you. (Sooooo… that situation I shared with you earlier about falling head over heels for custom rugs? Pretty darn accurate.)

And that’s 11! If you weren’t a rug convert before reading this, I hope you’ve come over to our side. We’re the color-loving, crumb-hiding, fun-and-fabulous side. And life sure is better over here.

Until next week,
